Oracle recently sent a missive to the Fifth Estate office asking us to warn those who are traveling west to bring: (besides their flowers and bananas) money for food and rent, sleeping bags and rucksacks, extra food (brown rice and soysauce—100 lbs. bags at rice mills for $12), camping equipment, warm clothing for the cold times, and proper I.D. Since so many are heading in that direction, it’ll get awfully hard to find anyone or do anything. We have another suggestion. Stay at home and make ‘it’ happen here. In Detroit. Right now. There are a great number of groovy people here, and plenty to do. Come down to the Warren Forest, work at the Fifth Estate, go to the SEE and the happenings in the park on Forest and John Lodge (on Sunday afternoons). Attend the Detroit Committee to End the War in Vietnam meetings, join in the Vietnam summer activities, go to poetry readings and workshops. If something you want isn’t happening, make it happen. Start your own bag with the Detroit people. You don’t have to travel thousands of miles and get lost in a crowd to be happy. Detroit is like LSD -you get out of it what you put into it. Dig?
