Breakthrough Denounces McCarthyism
I Don’t Want Him, You Can Have Him, He’s Too...
Hey Breakthrough! We don’t want him!
Breakthrough has been on this kick ever since Mayor Cavanagh ordered the police to crack down on the rightist group. They’ve been trying to make the mayor out to be some kind of leftist.
In an invective issued earlier this month the parapatriots called Mayor Cavanagh a puppet dancing to the tune of the leftists. They implied he is a toady to such organizations as the Dubois Clubs, the National Lawyers Guild, Students for a Democratic Society, for the various peace groups around Detroit. They linked him with such men as Dr. Tracy Pullman, Fr. Maurice Geary, Ernest Goldman and Rev. David Gracie.
To make their point Breakthrough demonstrated outside the City-County Building the day before Washington’s Birthday. They followed the demonstration with the presentation of a “Charlie McCarthy” dummy to the mayor. Except Cavanagh wasn’t there to accept it and the dummy was Jerry Mahoney—no doubt a fellow traveler.
Their point was that Cavanagh ushered in a new “McCarthyism,” “Charlie McCarthyism,” when he ordered the police vigil against Breakthrough.
“The Communists give the word and ‘Charlie McCarthy’ Cavanagh echoes it,” said a Breakthrough blurb.
To set the record straight, Breakthrough, Cavanagh is not a leftist; he is not our parrot.
There are several awards that would be a bit more appropriate for him. Mr. Cavanagh is certainly in the running for the “Bobby” award for self-seeking, issue — skirting politicians. Then there’s the “Millard Fillmore Cup” for the man who has said more to do less in this centennial year of Filmore’s 23rd birthday.
Perhaps next month we can jointly present the mayor with one of these awards. Meanwhile if you want to give a dummy away...
Step forward, Mr. Lobsinger.
