Medical Fund Appeals for Aid
The Emergency Medical Fund for Bernard, Garrett & Graham is making a widespread appeal for funds on the first anniversary of the — shooting at Debs Hall, headquarters of the Socialist Workers Party, where Leo Bernard was killed and Jan Garrett and Water Graham were seriously wounded by an anti-communist fanatic, May 16, 1966.
Contributions of $1,800 were made to the fund. $600 of this paid Leo’s funeral expenses, the balance paid part of the medical and rehabilitation expenses of Jan and Walter. Neither has yet completely recovered from-his wounds and Jan needs further surgery.
Signers of the appeal include: Jack Carper, Dr. Henry H. Crape, Mort Furay, Ernest Goodman, Rev. David M. Gracie, Rev. Charles Hill, Carl Haessler, Rev. John J. Kirvan, C. S. P., Charles Lockwood, O. Lee Molette, Dr. Milton Steinhardt, Councilman Mel Ravitz.
Contributions should be sent to Emergency Medical Fund for Bernard, Garrett & Graham, c/o English Department, Wayne State University, Detroit, Mich. 48202. Co-chairmen of the fund are Prof. David Herreschoff and Dr. Paul Lowinger.
A memorial meeting commemorating the tragic event will be held on Friday, May 19, 8 p.m. at Debs Hall, 3737 Woodward. Speakers will include Prof. Herreshoff, Garrett, Graham, Atty. Ernest Goodman and Irving Kirsch.
